The Red Light District or Red Light District is a traditional neighborhood located in the capital of the Netherlands. The place is a source of stories, especially the spicy ones, therefore, it has always attracted a large number of tourists interested in discovering the local pleasures or just those who are curious.
Prostitution in the Netherlands has been allowed since the 70s, however, it was only legalized in 2000, with the aim of curbing those who practice human trafficking. This same policy makes the country tolerant of drug use. What Holland does not allow is street prostitution.
In this way, the Bairro da Luz Vermelha emerged, through old fishermen's houses that were adapted and received showcases to expose the call girls and consequently attract customers. However, what was designed to be just a “catalogue” of prostitution ended up attracting a large number of tourists.
Any city is happy to attract a lot of tourists, however, in this particular case, things got complicated for the District. Thousands of people began to visit the neighborhood every day just to observe, something that harms business. In addition, since 2019, people are already thinking about how to solve the problem.
Residents also complain a lot about the place, as the behavior of tourists has started to affect their quality of life. Often, people who throw large amounts of garbage in the streets, walk drunk and urinate around the place.
With the Covid-19 pandemic, local prostitution had to stop, causing residents to enjoy the streets of the neighborhood in a peaceful way. Within this context, approval was given with the famous Red Light District.
Local authorities guarantee that the measure is not the end of legalized prostitution in the country, however, the objective is to move the place to another area of the city, promoting the creation of a neighborhood dedicated to this type of service and far from the city center. .
This new neighborhood has no defined location, however, it will be designed to be a sex trade, allowing more security for the locals. This decision generated happiness on the part of the residents, however, the sex workers were not very satisfied, as this could cause them to lose a loyal clientele.
O red light district even changing location to continue existing, it will leave a certain void in some regulars and local professionals, who have already got used to this, which is the most picturesque place in Amsterdam.
